I think this was meant to be reassuring but I am not sure that is how it comes across

Email from the Chancellor to the distribution list called "Everybody" (faculty, staff, students, alumni?)

I want to assure the campus community that PNC has an emergency response plan in place to respond to campus incidents. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the Virginia Tech students and with the entire Virginia Tech community"

Yes we do in fact have an emergency response plan. I have a copy with a designated home on my desk. I have been given a copy no less than three times since arriving here last August. I am not sure it would be at all helpful in the kind of incident that occured at Virginia Tech. It has protocols and procedures for the following: bomb threat, PPC Disturbances or Demonstrations, Criminal Behavior, Earthquake, Evaucations of buildings and/or grounds, Fire/Explosion, Hazardous Material Spills, Lockdowns, Media Relations, Medical Emergencies, Psychological Crisis, Snow Emergency, Suspiscious Package Identification and Handling, Tornado, and Utility Emergency.

My question how many folks on college campus received similarly vague messages today?

I received an email touting the card entry systems in the residence halls (would not help if a resident student was the problem), the 26 "sworn officers" that patrol the school (that's not many for a sizeable campus) and the fact that we could call upon the local police "to assist as needed" (but probably too late).

Interestingly, we didn't get ANYTHING.

Weird.

I received a call from ucf.. basically saying the same thing as what you received except he said he has asked his staff to see if there is anything else they can do differently or better.

But you know.. you can't stop crazy people from doing crazy things. It could have happened in a walmart, mall.. etc.. There really isn't anything you can do in a situation like that.
