On the way home from making an opening day stop at Garwood Orchard for morels, asparagus, and more, I was seduced by the beauty of spring and did a bit of wandering to see what was blooming. What is blooming includes: trillium, lilacs, dogwood, choke cherries, and so much more.

Here is one of several photos to capture what May 1 is like in my world. A few more are behind the cut and the rest are slowly uploading to flickr and you can click through via this one if you are curious.

One Corner of Campus

I still have a Richter's order of herb plants to go, will pick up some transplants locally, and I have lots of seeds from last year but today I placed my Seed Saver Exchange, Park's, and Cook's Garden orders. What I ordered hiding behind the cut. Read more... )

Snow and more coming down

My plans for the weekend: shoveling and then some more shoveling during the day and class prep after dark.

This is one of two pileated woodpeckers that have been visiting my yard this weekend. It is part of a mating pair. I know this because this is moments after baby woodpecker making too place. This is the male of the pair. Males and females can be distinguished by the red forehead and mustache that males have but females do not. Both members of the pair share in the incubation of eggs.

Pileated Woodpecker

Thinking about this as a change of pace for my bedding. I am feeling very drawn to shades of red/crimson at the moment but I want to keep the room at the new place from feeling to heavy or dark. Still daydreaming about possible wall colors since they can be something other than white.

mini musings from twitter:

  • 22:00 This evening, I took a break from working & worrying. Instead I researched shade gardening. My play doesn't look much different than work. #
  • 22:02 @tessa_racht LOL "squished frogs" -- I may never look at zucchini the same way again. My feeling toward eggplant is much the same. #
  • 22:08 Tomorrow is day 1 of the new position. I must remind myself that day 1 does not equal having a long (or even short) list of accomplishments #
  • 22:09 Reminders to breathe and keep it all in perspective will be welcomed over the next 3 months. #
  • 08:03 @PeelaPom Thank you. I hope you have an excellent week. #
  • 08:03 @Serolynne Thank you. #
  • 08:06 I need to tidy up my online presence. There are too many accounts I don't use and too many feeds in my google reader that I don't read. #
  • 09:40 Campus network still down. A few hundred people are spending first work day of the year twiddling their thumbs. #
  • 12:54 Want to see a bunch of stressed out people? Kill a campus IT network a week before a new semester start and after a holiday break. #
  • 12:55 Still no word on what the cause of the network failure might be or when it might be fixed #
  • 17:26 Cabbage pie for dinner and a bowl game for entertainment later. Not a bad Monday night. #
  • 17:27 Talked to soon to be housemate and it looks like we are going to have real living room furniture :) and not just my futon. #
  • 17:28 Those of you in the Orlando, 7 Sisters is opening later this month. Stop by and have a cuppa for me will you. The owner is a great person. #
  • 18:38 I will be pairing football with dreams of a very large fantasy order I would like to place with www.plantdelights.com/. #

Anyone have personal recommendations for inexpensive wooden bookshelves from any of the big box stores? At this point I am thinking that it may be back to cinder blocks and boards.

So what if nearly every school in 50 miles is closed, limbs breaking are causing power outages, and things are still getting worse. Evidently the meetings must go on and campus is open. I am headed off in hopes of not sliding off in a ditch in the name of doing my job. Given that most people live even further away than I do, I may arrive to find that we have to cancel the meeting anyway. Yes I am an IDIOT for even trying.
In all likelihood we are going to have to cancel a phone interview with a possible chair candidate. Said interview is scheduled for 8 a.m. tomorrow and weather forecasts make it likely that campus will be closed. The Dean/Acting Chair wants to have Monday morning or Tuesday afternoon as a backup plan. Looking at the weather forecasts for the 879 miles from here to my sister's my best shot at avoiding weather problems is to be on the road Saturday and Sunday. Technically I could wait to leave though I would have not leaving until Tuesday evening would mean the trip would be rushed to get there by Christmas Eve.

I wish I was like many people in my department and could simply say "sorry but no" without fretting about it.
A few people have commented that the books/CDs reached them; I hope most of the packages have found their way to their new homes.
Some people have too much time on their hands if they are using it for a good cause. See what I mean? (work safe if somewhat disturbing animal video)
Today's happy thing is finally getting to see the place that will soon be home and liking the possibilities of what I saw.

It is freaking cold here. Supposedly it is about 13 and feels like 4F but it feels much colder than that to me. Looks like a few inches of snow are headed our way tomorrow; hopefully not enough to cause campus to close and finals to be moved to Saturday.

I missed a couple of days of things that make me happy. Rather than go back and pick those days up, I'll just go from here with Day 3.

Things that made me happy today: an email back from Melissa and checking a few things off my to do list. Today was spent in the office in list mode so these are a bit wimpy.

Friday's moments and happenings of happiness/gratefulness:

  • the snow was lovely as I drove to campus
  • finally learning more about the house where I will be moving
  • growing connections with people on campus and the time spent with them at the after Senate social
