Dec. 22nd, 2007

I slept late today (9 a.m.) and woke up to grey and drizzly world. Unless measureable amounts fo snow tonight and tomorrow (possible 1 -2 inches) it won't be a white Christmas here. Oh, there will be piles along the edges of the street and parking lots left and some puddles of snow in shady corners but it is only marginally white at this point. I will admit that I am having to work at staying cheerful about the holiday season. I need some fact time with another human being. My few human interactions since Monday have all been of the customer/worker type.

Possible plans for the day: campus to pick up and print some things, Indian food, gym, CVS

In my fantasy life, my plans for the da would be quite different. I would be recovering from a solstice gathering with my circle/tribe and engaged in the final stages of preparing to host an holiday open house. In my fantasy world, I own a house with enough room to house a few guests overnight and a good deal of open space for parties. Each year I would host a party that starts Christmas Eve evening and goes until late Christmas night. Folks I know well would be invited to show up even earlier and stay even later. Friendly strangers of all types would be invited to join us for Christmas Day.

It wouldn't be a traditional gathering (big sit down dinner and such) but more information where those who attend are invited to share the things that are special to them. For me that would be cooking so there woudl be a variety of treats available and hot homemade cinnamon rolls an donuts on Christmas morning. The party would also give me an excuse to decorate the house. There would be large pots of simmering soup and chilly and a potluck dinner so folks could share there favorite holiday dishes. There would be plenty of hot cider and hot chocolate for sipping. The stereo would be playing a mix of silly, strange, and traditional songs of the season. There would be strategically placed misteltoe and hugs in abundance. Heck if I could convince folks to go along with it there would be holiday stories read outloud by the fire sometime late in the evening.

There would be space in the house for cards/board/parlor games, watching movies, and long conversations around a fireplace My fantasy house/commune is located in the country or near a park; so weather permitting moonlight walks would also be on the menu. Over time it would be nice if the tradition of going as a group to help with some charity event emerged. In short, it would be a standing event with the goal of being alone together on holidays. It would be a place to celebrate accomplishments during that year and release wishes for the coming new year. It would be a place for silliness and support. I image a similar but more traditional and shorter duration event for Thanksgiving.

The theme for the event would be playfulness and silliness. Silliness not in the practical joke sense but in the "inner child come out to play" way -- snowball fight, snow person building, adults sledding down the hills, playing Operation (the game; I assume they still make it), flying stuffed animal way.
