Meet my neighbor

This is one of two pileated woodpeckers that have been visiting my yard this weekend. It is part of a mating pair. I know this because this is moments after baby woodpecker making too place. This is the male of the pair. Males and females can be distinguished by the red forehead and mustache that males have but females do not. Both members of the pair share in the incubation of eggs.

I love pileated woodpeckers. And so, I now know, does my son.

Beautiful! I have some elusive (or perhaps just one) woodpecker somewhere on the property, but they are awfully shy it seems.
