Today's accomplishment that aren't
Aug. 17th, 2007 10:19 amSo far today, my biggest accomplishment has been one meeting the outcome of which was to schedule 6 more meetings (each of which will require 3 or 4 hours of preparation and take 2 hours) in the next 14 weeks. Somehow this doesn't feel like progress. This is especially true given that I have another meeting at 11 a.m. for a similar purpose. Oh and then there is a meeting at 3 p.m. -- you guessed it for the same purpose. After that I can give the departmental secretary a list of times when I am available for monthly departmental faculty meetings. I guess it fairness I have also updated my calendar to reflect the outcomes of meeting one.
Teaching/Instruction, Service/Engagement, Research/Discovery are the three required parts of being a faculty member. The first two take the most time and the last one is the one that is used as the do or die part of deciding whether I get tenure. To quote some commercial that is out there at the moment "There must be a better way." I need to think about how to declutter my life in terms of time commitments.
Edited to add a head desk moment: So WebCT was bought out by Blackboard (online learning systems). I just logged in to find that what was called WebCT Vista is now called Blackboard Vista. I know this is no big deal except for all of the places where I have created documents calling it WebCT Vista. Computer Services really should learn not to change things (even in minor ways) 3 days before the start of a new semester; it can easily send already stressed faculty over the edge.
