Yesterday was the first day of three days for the "Keep Looking: Start Seeing" photography and writing workshop at Taltree. We started with introductions and then a warm up exercise. First you had to feel an object inside a paper bag without looking at it and make a list of descriptive words based on what you felt. Then you took it out and looked at it and wrote another descriptive list. Finally you made a list of descriptors based on looking at it through a magnifying glass. My object was the dried skull bone of some small animal (not all that pleasant). Finally in teams of three we wrote a haiku about about of the three objects held by that group. Our group had a dried ear and husk from a corn. Each of the three people independently wrote one line and then you put them together. My group's haiku behind the cut )

After that we spent about 90 minutes wandering through a mixed oak and hickory forest. The intent was to focus on small, specific things and then point them out to one another. The weather was wonderful and several of the folks in the class of 17 are interesting. A nice way to spend the morning.

When the class ended at noon, I decided to stretch the boundaries of my world a bit and headed further east on Hwy 30 to see what there was to see. I found an almost perfect park for picnics. Some photo possibilities but more a people watching, kite flying, frisbee playing sort of place. Park description behind the cut )

Here is one of the photos that I took at the park.

By the time I wandered around there for a couple of hours it was getting a bit warm to be dressed in black pants and a black long-sleeved shirt and I was tired so I decided to find I-65 and head toward home. A Cracker Barrel sign lured me in for lunch for sentimental reasons. I made it home about 2:30. After uploading the photos from the day, I tried to look through them but kept dozing off until I was interrupted by a sales person at the door. I then headed off to Home Depot to pick up plants for my deck. Somehow when I came home I ended spending a couple of hours working in the yard clearing more of the mess along the fence. I called it quits about 6:30 and watched the first Harry Potter movie while editing photos before calling it a night.

This morning I was at work in the yard clearing bursh and planting things before 7 a.m. I ran out of potting soil and decided I should call it quits before I was completely worn out because as far as I know Janus, Dan and I are off to explore SW Michigan this afternoon.
