Home Sweet Home
Home again. I am home again for at least a few days. I could deploy again next week. If so it will likely be to Cedar Rapids unless Bertha turns into a problem for the southeast.
The garden is a bit out of control. The saddest thing is that all the broccoli bolted while I was gone. I was hoping that J or ChR would cut it an eat it. Oh well. I picked a big bowl of stuff tonight. It included half a dozen cherry tomatoes, a couple dozen beans - some purple and some green, a couple dozen pea pods, three green onions, three tiny little carrots, a dozen or so kale leaves, some lettuce leaves, a few stalks of rhubarb. Tonight was basically a bit of triage to start untangle the jungle that happened while I was gone. In the morning, I'll start dehydrating herbs and work on getting things back under control with trimming, staking, weeding, harvesting, etc.. There will be a few empty containers that can be replanted.
My landlord put a small window A/C unit in the bedroom while I was gone so I can keep at least one room cool on the really hot days. The rest of the time, I will make do with fans and going to my office on the worst days. My plan for the rest of the week is to working on personal things in the mornings and professional things in the afternoon and evenings.
Now I am off to cook dinner with some of what I picked.

Last I heard Bertha has weakened to a Category 1 storm.
Enjoy all your fresh veggies.

I have a cheap Ronco dehydrator. I had one for years back when I was married. It worked fine for tomatoes and jerky. I am sure I used it for some other things but those were the biggies. I let it go in one of the move related purges over the last few years.
I would like to have an Excalibur but that isn't going to happen this summer.
There are a couple of good yahoo lists that talk about dehydrating and other food preservation and storage methods if you are interested.
