Self-worth

Apr. 3rd, 2008 11:34 am
In doing some background reading for research I was reminded of a distinction that is important in understanding why I am starting to feel different in my 3D life (as compared to my online life).

Efficacy-based self-esteem involves seeing oneself as competent and capable.
Worth-based self-esteem involves seeing oneself as accepted and valued.

It is the second type that has been to rare in my life. There was a small pool of that type that developed when I lived in Orlando that centered around personal relationships. Both types of self-esteem that are being fed by developing relationships and activities centered around my current campus. It is nice to be reminded of the vocabulary to capture what I am feeling.

More complicated in my own life is the connection the role of identity-verification in the role of building and maintaining self-esteem. I have lost clarity with regard to articulating the identities that are important to me so it is hard to have the identities that matter to me validated. That is a post for another time. Back to reading.
